Discipline to Destiny

“Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishment.” – Jim Rohn

Let me tell you awareness is so amazing. Once you know something you can’t unknow it. My journey into health and wellness has opened my eyes to the importance of discipline along the journey of life. In the past, I felt I carried a sufficient amount of discipline accomplishing my goals and dreams. However, it was not until I began my work with college athletes that I began to realize the depths of discipline. Their experience would warm me into my future.

Payton Youngblood was the first athlete that I had the pleasure of working with. This guy is one of the most special humans I have ever met. I remember the day I met him. It was the day I would give my first presentation at the collegiate level. After the completion of the presentation he would approach me with a list of questions. Immediately I was drawn in by his curiosity for the process I presented.

I was thrilled when he agreed to work with me. Our weekly calls would pave the way for the creation of the QHP 24 week program. As we began our work together I believe our shared energies would fuel us both to continue expanding into the novel health and wellness space. His desire to acquire knowledge was feverish, motivating me to focus my spare time on presenting him with the latest scientifically proven techniques for optimizing performance.

As Payton began acquiring healthy habits, I began to notice a shift in him. You see, Payton was always playful first. Just his nature. A great characteristic to possess. Yet, I began to notice his motivation and focus taking shape. As our work together progressed he would begin stacking habits which began paying dividends like compounding interest. When we began our work together he was coming off the bench being the 7th or 8th man.

Payton had suffered a back injury the year prior to our work together causing him to redshirt. He was looking for an edge. Boy did he find it. Next thing I know he’s a starter, slowly defining himself as a team leader. Discipline was at the center of his transformation. Character development would lend to his holistic progress. The team goal handed to me by the coaching staff was to develop a player driven team.

Payton grew so much that I recall witnessing him lead a book review with his teammates. He was a professor. Sitting with an audience, legs crossed in the most sophisticated of ways. His approach instilled comfort and confidence in the room to have shared discussion. I was in admiration of his skill to manage the room. I remember thinking this is self-love. Payton had learned his value and was now sharing the fruits of his labor with his teammates.

I read 48 books that first year in preparation for the work we did together. Payton inspired me to chase my dream of developing a company whose sole mission was to help athletes find themselves in the holistic process we would design together. As I witnessed him that day I remember feeling such a warm feeling within me knowing that I was a part of something with incredible potential. Later that day, an assistant on staff would share with me how disciplined Payton had become. Tom would say, “Payton is wearing me out.” He was referring to the athlete’s desire to have individual workouts.

Payton’s discipline would garner the best stats of his college career shooting 45% from three point range. Defensively, he was locked in. That season the team was predicted to finish middle to bottom of the ASUN conference. Yet, this team would have better expectations. The team would compete for the ASUN conference championship with Payton as the leader of the team and the leading scorer down the stretch. At the buzzer the final score read 76-72 with Liberty taking the win. It was such a hard fought competition with both teams providing an incredible show for the spectators.

Discipline is the foundation of transformation. It’s the consistent effort, day in and day out, that bridges the gap between setting goals and achieving them. This consistent commitment to daily habits and routines, even in the face of challenges and setbacks, is what ultimately drives progress and success. Whether it’s training for a sport, building a business, or developing personal skills, discipline fuels progress and growth, ensuring that each small step forward accumulates into significant achievements over time.

Payton’s story is a testament to how discipline, combined with a growth mindset and the right support, can lead to remarkable achievements and lifelong fulfillment. His journey from being the seventh man off the bench to becoming a team captain and leading scorer exemplifies the power of disciplined effort. He embraced the principles of consistency, resilience, and focused dedication, which transformed not only his athletic performance but also his character and leadership skills.

Discipline enables us to push through the initial difficulties of learning new skills or overcoming weaknesses. It helps us to maintain our focus on long-term objectives, even when the immediate results are not evident. This commitment to discipline instills a sense of purpose and direction, allowing us to persevere through the ups and downs of any life event.

Moreover, discipline is not just about rigid self-control; it’s about making conscious choices that align with our goals and values. It involves prioritizing what truly matters and letting go of distractions that can derail our progress. This conscious effort to stay aligned with our aspirations creates a powerful momentum that propels us towards our greatest potential. Important to understand is the role of dopamine in this process. Each time we say yes to our goals challenging ourselves we get a little “hit.” It is this dopamine provided consistently through effort that creates the momentum to greatness!

Embrace discipline, and you will find the path to your greatest potential. It is the key to unlocking your inner strength and capabilities, allowing you to achieve more than you ever thought possible. Through disciplined actions, you build the resilience to overcome obstacles, the focus to stay on track, and the determination to keep moving forward. Ultimately, discipline is the linchpin of a fulfilling and successful life, enabling you to reach your goals and live with a profound sense of accomplishment and purpose.
