Moderate

“Avoiding extremes, the wise gain the experience of the Middle Path which produces insight, calms, and leads to higher knowledge, enlightenment.” – Lao Tzu

Emotional regulation is a superpower. Arguably, it’s the greatest power humanity possesses. We live in a world that seems to embody the definition of insanity, repeating cycles and sinking deeper into the quicksand of unmanaged emotional turmoil. From the Macedonians and Persians to the Greeks and Romans, history has meticulously documented the rise and fall of great empires, often highlighting the consequences of unchecked emotions.

Today, we see the same patterns repeated. Labels, roles, genders, diet fads, exercise regimes, FOMO, YOLO – all these create divisions that sever the threads holding us together. The irony? Genetically, we are 99.9% identical. Our uniqueness is found in the remaining 0.01%. True beauty lies within, not in aesthetics or external matter, but in the energy that powers our vessels, guiding us through the river of life.

I know, this might seem like a lot to digest. But these thoughts flow through me, and yet, I can moderate them anytime. It’s my gift, an internal compass guiding me through life’s choices, accepting the ups and downs. This energy is perhaps synonymous with the soul, weightless yet powerful. Consider this: weigh a body before death and after, and there’s no change in weight. What is this energy? How can we represent it materially?

Einstein delved into this quantum world, famously referring to it as “spooky action at a distance.” This “spooky” nature arises because our thinking minds struggle to conceptualize it, yet vibrations are felt rather than understood intellectually. Einstein himself, despite his genius, faced challenges in maintaining stable romantic relationships, possibly reflecting a difficulty in moderating emotional energy. Let’s get back on track.

My health journey has been about learning to moderate. What does this mean? It’s about finding the middle way through life, as Lao Tzu described in the Tao Te Ching. To discover this middle path, unique to each of us, we must first master emotional regulation. This effort yields a high return on investment (ROI). Much of our life’s energy is driven by emotions. Emotions like anger, worry, guilt, or shame can lead to choices with less than desirable outcomes.

Understanding the inverse relationship between emotional dysregulation and rational thinking is critical. When emotions run high, rational thought often takes a back seat, leading to misdirected energy. Conversely, purely rational thinking can miss the depth and richness that emotions provide. Here’s where moderation becomes essential. Learning to balance the middle way between these opposing experiences is key to a fulfilling life. Like a sine wave representing energy and frequencies, the tighter the sine wave, the higher the frequency. By emotionally regulating with a growth mindset, one can experience life’s richness while conserving energy and creating a higher vibration.

At Quantum Human Performance (QHP), we bridge the gap between “spooky” scientific action and material science. We use heart rate variability (HRV) as a marker for performance and emotional health. HRV measures the slight fluctuations in time between heartbeats. A low HRV correlates with higher risks for heart attacks and other pathologic conditions, whereas a high HRV indicates healthy living.

As a certified HeartMath instructor, I’ve learned techniques to improve HRV. One such exercise involves breathing into the heart area, creating an even breath pattern, like a 5-second inhale and 5-second exhale. The client then recalls a moment of gratitude or love for someone or something in their life. This exercise can increase HRV, indicating that positive emotions are linked with a higher HRV, or a higher vibration. Conversely, recalling situations of anger or frustration lowers HRV, leading to a low vibration.

Utilizing HRV training allows the experiencer to realize the power of emotional regulation, or emotional moderation. By conserving precious emotional energy, the body is spared from the ravaging effects associated with negative emotional states. This can bring forth the elusive middle way, creating a greater sense of internal peace and contentment with life. I’ve discovered that learning to moderate my emotions allows me to harmonize with life’s events. Thus, humbling myself to the present moment, as it offers all the information necessary to live an abundant life.
