“The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will instruct his patients in care of the human frame, in diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease.” – Thomas Edison

What are we? As I contemplated this question about 6 years ago, I wrestled with the idea of approaching health from a holistic approach. Are we the physical body? The part of us that everyone sees and interacts with. Are we the mind busy with thoughts and interpreting the world around us producing emotions and feelings? The part that no one else can see. Or are we an energy within that powers the whole system?

Although scientists are still wrestling with the question as well, I came to the conclusion that it did not matter which of the three identifies each of us. What matters is how we take care of the whole. As we began our work creating QHP, we started with the physical body. We choose to establish a foundation based on the physical aspect of living. We divided this section of our coaching program into 4 sections. Habit formation, breathing dynamics, sleep optimization and finally nutrition and hydration strategies.

Having success with our approach, we next came to know the mind. The mind as mentioned is the collection of our sensory experience, emotions, feelings and our individual perception of the world around us. Colored by the past, the mind also represents our experiences in life. It is through these experiences that we learn to adjust our perceptions to present moment life we encounter each day. In this section, we decided on mindfulness training, mindset mastery, character development and an introduction to flow states.

Energy was considered next. When the human body is weighed immediately before and after death, it weighs the same. Yet, we know life is represented by some form of unknown energy which has been termed the soul. Scientists still haven’t found a location in the body that would hold the soul. This energy may be the true representation of who we are; however a lack of tangible knowledge it is difficult to argue it as a truth under material physical laws. Safe to say it is a part of us that requires some level of attention.

Finding flow was designed as an attempt to merge all of the collected knowledge so that we may each learn to flow with the events of life as they present themselves. Having worked with athletes for the past 6 years, I learned to use the statement ‘control the controllables’ often. Most of life is not within our control. We cannot influence the weather, the sun, the moon, other people’s actions and many events throughout the course of life. Yet, we can manage the way we respond to life’s events.

Understanding this dynamic is what finding flow is all about. It’s about pursuing your purpose while accepting setbacks and challenges as the learning experience of life. A dance that leaves no space between. We are each one with the environment that we exist with. One is inseparable from the other. As is our health. The body, mind and spirit are inseparable. Hence, the reason for our multidimensional approach to health and performance. By nurturing each aspect, we create a harmonious balance that allows us to live our fullest, most vibrant lives.
